Level 2 Media Unit 1C: Narrative and Genre Key Terms
Non Linear Narratives
• Chronology-  The arrangement of events or dates in the order of their occurrence

• Concurrent / parallel narratives - operating or occurring at the same time


• Flashback / Flashforward - when you go back on a past event or event that is yet to come


• Time and space -location its based and time


• Serial format - a serial has a continuing plot that unfolds in a sequential episode-by-episode fashion


• Cliffhangers - a cliff-hanger is when a story is ended before the end of the story(eastenders)


• Editing and non-linear narratives: continuity v dis-continuity-   the scene if following as normal (prison break) lots of flash back but its continues as a hole but in each episode there's discontinuity

Narration
• Use of a narrator as a piece to camera, voice over, caption -the narrator

• Subjective / objective- based on personal opinion ,so you then have an objective view


• Mode of address / tone -how you would have the media text delivered

Genre and its function
• Types

• Sub –genres- action ,horror ,romance ,fantasy,si-fi, thriller


• Cross genre products when they mix different genres together

• Role for the audience - consuming it


• Role for the producer - they determine what get shot ,the cliffhangers,target audience

                          Prison Break The time and location started off at a tattoo place then later on at a bank There was also jump put involved for example at the tattoo place it jumped to the bank then from the prison to Michael’s lawyers The used flash-forward to then enter the next scene with non-diegetic sound There is also a use of flash back when Michael went to visit his brother in jail so before he went in. Types of organisation unit 8 public service broadcasters- BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) The british Broadcasting corporations is a british public service broadcaster with its headquarters at broadcasting house in london   Private Service Broadcasting-ITV (international television) ITV is a commercial television channel in the united kingdom. previously a network of separate regional television channels.ITV currently operates in england ,wales ,scotland  Regulatory organisations-PEGI (Pan European Game Information) decide the age rating of the game  BBFC- ( British Bored Of Film Classification) decide what rating a film or tv series  OFCOM- (Office Of Communications) Communications regulator in the uk.We regulate the tv,radio and video-on demand sectors fixed-line,mobiles and postal service, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate
